Whether or not one cares about fashion, most of us care about looking good to others and making a positive impression. Don’t let naive style mistakes get in your way. They can make a difference to getting the restaurant table you want but didn’t reserve, the job or promotion you want, or a second date. Follow these 5 simple rules.

Style Don't1. Cut the X stitch on the the vent flap of your new jacket or on the kick pleat of your new skirt. No, it’s not meant to be there just because it was on the garment when you bought it. The manufacturer added a big exterior cross stitch to protect the flap or pleat from ripping or wrinkling during shipping. Cut if off and remove the thread before you leave the house, or risk looking unprofessional and naive.

Style Don't

2. Cut off the “100% Cashmere” label attached to the sleeve of your winter coat. It’s not meant to be there once you buy it. Yay! You knew to buy cashmere. Don’t blow your style cred by leaving the merchandising label on the sleeve.

Style Don't3. Don’t wear leggings as pants. Unless you are going jogging or to/from an exercise class, it’s not OK to wear leggings as pants with your butt and crotch exposed. Whether you are size 2 or size 20, leggings should be worn with a top that covers the top of your thighs. Pure and simple, leggings as pants are just not attractive.

White tights4. No white or ivory tights. Unless you’re under 9 years old, do not wear white or ivory stockings or tights. Kate and Pippa managed to make nude stockings somewhat acceptable, but there is no budging on ivory. It’s juvenile and simply not flattering on anyone.

Fashion Don't

5. No square toe shoes unless you want to look like a pilgrim. This rule is doubly important for men. (Women’s shoes by Roger Vivier are the exception to this rule.)
