When the phone lines are down, the power is out, and batteries are waning on cell phones, how does one alert their family and friends that they are okay? Facebook!
As a helpless Midwesterner, I took to the social media networks to check on my NYC network throughout the storm last night. Thanks to the instantaneous nature of Facebook, I was not only able to see the humorous Instagrams of glow sticks and whiskey bottles, but also amateur photos of flooded streets in Alphabet City, downed trees and discussion of the singular sounds of sirens and wind. I knew exactly when the power went out because everyone took to the newsfeeds to lament unfinished episodes of “Homeland” and the excavation of old scented candles. Although New Yorkers always reserve a sense of humor for even the worst situations, this was a more serious matter – and thanks to social media, I was comforted to hear my friends, family and colleagues were safe…and sound[ing off].
From RED Chicago, we hope that everyone affected by the storm is fully stocked up on food, good books and warm blankets. Here’s to a swift recovery from Hurricane Sandy. Our hearts are with you!
