At the RED PR New York office, we’re frequently asked by visiting friends about must-do NYC activities. My answer is always theater! As a self-proclaimed stage aficionado, I can attest that New York’s theater scene is unparalleled and appeals to all types and preferences of theatergoers. Broadway, off-Broadway, downtown, small theaters, shows from international, traveling troupes, musicals, kids shows, experimental, tear-jerkers, interactive…NYC is a one-stop-theater-shop!
I strive to take advantage of living in a city with such a thriving and rich theater scene, so I set the goal of seeing at least one show every month. Below are a couple of my recent personal favorites:
Peter and the Starcatcher, the winner of five Tony Awards, is a hilarious prequel to the classic novel Peter Pan. Props are few and far between in this Disney play, but you wouldn’t know it, since the actors all play multiple parts and even those of inanimate objects (even doors in one particularly memorable scene). In true Peter Pan fashion, Peter and the Starcatcher requires imagination, which makes for a fun and unique show for viewers of all ages. Plus, if you’re bringing the family, you’ll appreciate the riddled adult humor in the form of hilarious literary and pop culture references. Check out the show to see how Peter and the Lost Boys got their start and found themselves on Neverland, but hurry because the last performance will be January 20th, 2013. For the ultimate in family-friendly fare, check out Newsies, the latest A+ musical from Disney. This show surrounds a group of newsboys in New York in 1899, fighting for their rights against oppressive publishers. This enchanting musical features amazing songs, group dances and a stage full of fit, good-looking people cheering the audience to never stop fighting for what they believe in. From a fashion stand-point, you’ll be pining for high-waisted, late 19th century men’s clothing to make a comeback (note: this does NOT include the newsboy hat that reemerged in the mid 2000’s). To boot, Newsies won a Tony Award for Best Original Score and will be running on Broadway indefinitely – that’s how good it is! Visit http://www.newsiesthemusical.com/ to get tickets.
Tell us in the comments what shows you’ve seen and loved lately, or which ones you’d like to hear about.
