Anne Hathaway does not come off as genuine. From interviews in magazines to her teeth grinding Oscars acceptance speech, everything about Anne Hathaway feels forced and premeditated. We live in a culture where consumers judge everything in Hollywood to an achievable standard of perfection, yet still expect stars to be “Just Like Us!” in celebrity tabloids. Readers want to see actors combing the aisles at the grocery store, taking out their trash and getting tipsy with their friends at bars. Per her squeaky clean image, Anne Hathaway does not take out the trash. Anne most likely takes her recycled newspapers and turns them into origami cranes so they can fly out her window and inspire young dreamers.
When another rising talent, Jennifer Lawrence, took a spill on the steps in her Dior couture ball gown en route to accept her Oscar, America fell in love with her just a bit more. Why? Because this is something that could happen to anyone…and it solidifies her image as “real.”
How can Anne Hathaway move forward without becoming the antithesis to “America’s Darling?” In her next interview she should let her guard down. Speak from the heart and not the script. It is clear that she is a nice, well-intentioned person, but she needs to directly address the haters and remind them that she is just another working, married female who happens to have a lot of exposure under her belt. Maybe if viewers are reminded that Anne Hathaway truly is a star “Just Like Us” they’ll stop putting her on a negative pedestal.
